Bownik

A Polish artist born in 1977. He graduated from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin with a degree in Philosophy and from the Academy of Arts in Poznań with a degree in Photography. His best known works include the photographic series Gamers, Słodowy, Koleżanki i koledzy, Disassembly, and Rewers. The photobook Disassembly, published by Mundin, won the main prize in the competition Fotograficzna Publikacja Roku 2014 and received a nomination for the Kassel Photobook Award 2014. Bownik’s works can be found in the collections of Museum In Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, ING Polish Art Foundation, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, as well as in private collections. The artist lives and works in Warsaw.

Bownik’s project violates the taboo, using the Christmas wafer as just a regular canvas for his drawings. Through the process of re-scaling, his work shows how cult objects transform into a completely new matter that loses its original context.

Bownik’s vision takes the intense, saturated hues of a bird’s plumage and has them disperse, turning them into a buzzing phantom of spectroscopic dimensions. These extinct creatures come back to life in the form of a mysterious spectrum that casts shade.

Reverse

For the last two years, Bownik has been documenting clothes that are part of museum exhibitions. Using the convention of museum photography – a grey background, neutral light – he incorporates his images into the sphere of objective record. However, the pictures do not fit into well-known historical narratives. The gesture of turning the clothes inside-out symbolically invokes the possibility of a different reading.
