Jerzy Szaniawski

Born in 1886, Jerzy Szaniawski was an acclaimed playwright, writer, and essayist. According to Andrzej Klominek, no other author enjoyed the level of reverence Szaniawski received from Marian Eile, “Przekrój”’s founder and its first editor-in-chief. “Anything submitted by Szaniawski was immediately included in the upcoming issue,” wrote Klominek. “Eile never even considered making any changes or adjustments to the text, despite often having such reservations with other writers. He always referred to Szaniawski with utmost respect and appreciation.” Szaniawski debuted in “Przekrój” in 1949 with his series of short stories, “Stories About Professor Tutka”. For many years he insisted that his stories were published exclusively in “Przekrój”. On top of that, Szaniawski gave not one, but two interviews to “Przekrój”, despite being famously elusive and reluctant to do any interviews at all. He passed away in 1970.
